Brahim Boulami began running the steeplechase in the mid 1990's after he finished his degree in Physical Education in Morocco. His first major competition was the 1996 Olympics where he finished 7th. In the 1997 World Championships he finished 10th. He won the Mediteraenen Games in 1997 and was 22nd at the 1997 World Cross Country Championships. Brahim did win the Moroccan Cross Country in 1997.
Brahim made up for his poor showing at the Worlds by winning the Weltklasse in Zurich on August 17, 2001 in the 3rd fastest time ever recorded of 7:58.50 and setting a stadium record as well. Brussels was to be his next race and on 24 August 2001 Brahim Boulami became the World Record holder in the 3000mSt when he ran 7:55.28 before a sellout crowd in Brussels. Brahim is the 1st non-Kenyan in 25 years to hold the record in the steeple and he hopes to hold on to it for a long period of time.
Brahim culminated his 2001 season by winning the gold medal at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia on September 5, 2001 and the Grand Prix Final of the IAAF in Melbourne, Australia on September 9, 2001.
For his efforts, Boulami was ranked number 6 in the world in all of athletics by the IAAF and number 1 in the Steeplechase by Track & Filed News Magazine for 2001 as well as number 9 in the world overall by magazine.
1998: Brahim was 3rd in the African Championships and was 6th in the 4K cross country championships. Brahim finished 3rd at the Goodwill Games in 1998 in New York. In 1999, Brahim was injured and did not compete much.
